TYPES OF MASSAGE

Sports Massage

Sports Massage is a technique that focuses on the deep layers of muscle tissue.  It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibres of the muscle, tendons, and fascia.  By incorporating Friction and Trigger Response Techniques, it helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue.

Maintenance : regular massage can help maintain and/improve flexibility.

Pre-event Massage  : a supplement to an athlete’s warm-up to enhance  circulation and reduce excess muscle and tension, prior competition.

Post-event Massage : used to reduce muscle spasms and metabolic build up that occur with rigorous exercise.

Rehabilitation It can be used as rehabilitation; by speeding up the healing process on acute or chronic muscle, tendon and ligament injuries.

This treatment is not just for adults and children who are sportspeople; anyone can benefit from this massage, including people in physically demanding jobs, and those not so obvious (occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce many similar characteristics to sports injuries).

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a therapy that helps alleviate stress, tension, and relieve muscle soreness which builds up in the body’s tissues during physical activity. By massaging the deeper layers of muscle tissues and often incorporating stretching, the Therapist can maintain and improve range of motion and flexibility, bringing the client back to optimum performance.

This technique is often used in combination with other massage procedures such as Sports Massage.  Deep Tissue Massage is suitable for most ages.  It can bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, such as work related problems, repetitive strain injuries (RSI), whiplash, falls and postural (structural) alignment problems that sometimes go back to childhood and adolescence.

Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu?   Shiatsu is a form of bodywork, which uses the power of touch and pressure to affect energy flow. The word “Shiatsu” literally means “finger pressure”, although the treatment techniques also include palming, stretching and gently manipulating the body. Shiatsu is performed through a single layer of clothing, usually with the receiver lying on the floor on a futon. It is deeply relaxing, yet invigorating, resulting in a feeling of tranquility, balance and well-being.

Although originating in Japan, Shiatsu is based on the principles of Chinese medicine and theoretically very similar to acupuncture. The energy system known as “Qi” is believed to flow through channels ~  meridians ~ in the body. These meridians, and specific points along them, relate to, and impact upon our internal organs, emotions and spiritual harmony.

What happens in a session?    The receiver remains on floor level, either lying down on his/her front, back or side. Sometimes a client is treated in a sitting position if this is more comfortable. Pressure is applied with fingertips, palms, or elbows to relevant places on the body to readjust energy imbalances. There may also be some stretching and joint manipulation. It should be noted, however, that though the steady pressure can be quite deep, all the techniques are non-intrusive and gentle.

Who needs Shiatsu? Shiatsu is an holistic treatment in which the whole body is treated, not just an area of concern or pain. In this way the meridians can have an impact on the emotional state of mind as well as on the functions of the muscles, joints and internal organs.

Shiatsu, besides being a highly dynamic form of therapy, is also a very effective form of preventative medicine.  Anyone can receive it and everyone benefits from it.
